Our Acomb Nursery is our newest site, and is situated within the grounds of Westfield Primary School in Acomb, York.
Each of the rooms follow the Muddy Boots theme & style to support our curiosity approach to learning, as well as having direct access to an outdoor garden space, which supports our whole ethos – to not be afraid to let children learn by getting muddy, exploring, going on adventures and getting out there and having a go!
At our Acomb site our children enjoy a wide range of activities both indoor and out, planned by a qualified and experienced staff team who genuinely love and care for all the children. They also enjoy nutritionally balanced food which is freshly prepared on site by the team, who minimise the use of sugar and other additives, never add salt, serves a minimum of four portions of fruit and veg each day, and uses local suppliers whenever possible.
Within the site we have 4 rooms catering for different ages, which you can find out a little bit more about below, as well as by using the links in the titles.
The Discoverers Room is where all our youngest babies have lots of fun and cuddles. In the Discoverers Room we do our best to make sure our families feel as settled and reassured as possible. At this very early age, babies are taking everything in – watching and observing everything around them, listening to all the interesting new sounds, and learning by feeling and touching everything in sensory exploration. We work to encourage a baby’s development in a space which is homely, nurturing and stimulating.
With growing independence, and with their own unique personality really coming through, children at this age are starting to really develop social skills and make lasting friendships. In the Investigators Room, we support these skills by focusing on group activities, indoors and outdoors, offering lots of physical and social interaction. The children are also ready to start learning about self-help and life skills – shared meal times where the children are encouraged to feed themselves, dressing skills, and lots of toilet training all helps towards children’s independence. This room has oodles of space for our little Investigators to express their freedom, enjoying a vast range of learning situations, exploring, experimenting and discovering whilst having fun indoors and out – the children enjoy regular access to the ‘muddy garden’ on a daily basis.
The Pre-school Room is always buzzing with energy as the children begin their first steps to mainstream education. This is where children are getting ready to go to Reception at big school. There are opportunities to learn at every turn, including early reading and maths skills, mark-making, imaginative play and ICT, which are reinforced through what we call ‘purposeful play’. Activities and play experiences are planned to ensure each child is challenged and given chance to learn and develop on an individual basis, whilst having lots of fun of course! The children are also encouraged to contribute to the running of the Pre-School Room and help out by laying the tables for lunch, watering the plants or tidying up after themselves.
Pioneers is our Out of School and Holiday Club, providing children between the ages of 4-11 a fun and exciting environment to play and relax before and after school. Pioneers have a play room with a creative area, games station and role play corner, a dining room and free flow access to our large outdoor garden space, which has large fixed play equipment, vegetable plots and planters, a natural woodland area and large lawn for outdoor games. At both breakfast and teatime we provide our children nutritious home cooked food, utilising locally sourced ingredients to ensure the children enjoy a healthy, balanced diet, and are set up for a great day at school each day. We also ensure we can cater for any and all individual dietary needs and food allergies to make sure no one misses out.
