We love playdough here at Muddy Boots – there’s so much that can be done with it. We love to make models, do pretend baking with it, create artwork by adding natural things like leaves and flowers and use it develop our gross and fine motor skills.
We know that you can buy playdough but we don’t think you can beat home made and it’s super easy to make and really adaptable! Here is our favourite recipe:
You will need:
- A big pan
- A spoon
- A cup or mug
- 4 cups of Plain flour
- 2 cups of Salt
- 4 tablespoons of Oil
- 4 tablespoons of cream of tartar (not essential but your playdough will last longer if used)
- Water
- Food colouring/essence/glitter/paint etc
Step 1 – Add the flour, salt and cream of tartar to your bowl and mix together
Step 2 – Add the oil and mix well
Step 3 – Decide how you want your playdough. You can add food colouring or paint if you would like it colourful, essences for smell or glitter for a bit of sparkle. Or you can leave it plain and then add to it once it is made.
Step 4 – Add 3 cups of water and mix until smooth
Step 5 – Add your final cup of water slowly – mixing all the time
Step 6 – (You will need a grown up for this!) – Pour the mixture into a pan and heat on a low to medium heat. Stir continuously (it will start to look lumpy but keep going!) and it will start to come together away from the side of the pan. You will know when it’s done.
Step 7 – Tip out and allow to cool (the playdough is lovely to explore when slightly warm but ask a grown up to check this for you!)
Step 8 – Have fun and get creative – we love to use rollers and cutters but also like to add things like pipe cleaners, dry spaghetti, google, flowers and sticks.
To store your playdough – pop it in a sealed container or wrap in clingfilm and keep it in the fridge. This will help it to last longer.
We’d love to see your playdough creations!
